The Bernina Express runs between Chur and Tirano in Italy by crossing the Swiss Engadin Alps. It is recognised as one of the world’s most scenic railway journeys and exceeded my expectations, wonderful mountain scenery all the way. The trip lasts four hours, through 55 tunnels and across the Bernina Pass at 2,253 metres (7,392 ft) above sea level. The entire line is metre gauge and electrified. We took the advice to travel in a standard coach rather than paying for the panoramic seats and still enjoyed fabulous views. Sunny on the ascent but falling snow and poor visibility as we approached the summit, then down to sunshine in Italy.

At Tirano, a brisk 15 minute walk took us to an excellent vegan restaurant for lunch, returning just in time to enter the 14:08 on the app, regenerate our tickets and take our places on the train.

We could use our debit cards to swipe in and out of the Milan metro which made it easy. We stayed at Eco Hotel at € 302 for a triple room for two nights with breakfast plus €6.30 per person per night city tax. We dined at the hotel, Rowan and I were satisfied with our choice, Christine was unimpressed with hers.

Distance walked: 3.59 miles, Train miles: 186 (300 km)

We spent Monday looking round the city, distance walked: 9.82 miles
