Day ride from Palma

Sarah left early for the 09:00 airport bus for her flight back to Valencia, after which we set off with the bikes. Today was Palm Sunday and many people were on their way to church dressed in gowns and carrying olive branches. It was cloudy but not too cool as we rode west along the promenade to the port and continued along the coast to Palma Nova where we headed inland for Calvia, climbing over a pass, then on to Capdella and down towards Andratx. Lots of cyclists were out and about, many of them from Germany.

Shortly before Andratx we turned off for a long climb up to the north-west coast with super views. An undulating ride took us through Estellenes and Banyabufar and a final long climb into Esporles and a repeat of our initial entrance into the city. We reached the apartment at 18:00 in time to cook dinner. As we ate, we heard drumming outside, looked out of the window and saw people dressed in gowns.

We went out to see what was happening, people on horseback and the sound of drums which we followed and came upon the processions. There were lots of groups, in different coloured gowns which we observed as we walked around taking in the scene. We suddenly realised that we were lost but after some worry found our way back to the apartment.
