Villarcayo to Oña

The hotel served a good breakfast from eight, more conducive for a good start, though we had to call in at the supermarket after loading up so we could lunch on the way. The via verde took us all the way so it was an easy 35km, the shortest ride of the holiday. We took our time, enjoying the views from the path and looking at the old stations, some trashed and graffitied, others restored to serve as dwellings. The day was generally cool and cloudy but very warm during the sunny spells.

Fields of dead sunflowers populated the adjoining fields, sad at the end of summer, they’d have looked spectacular a couple of months ago. Later we passed through high hills, some tunnelled through, others cut. We arrived mid afternoon and checked in, leaving our bikes in their garage. Opposite our hotel was the  Monastery of San Salvador, a massive Benedictine monastery founded in 1011. Luckily it was open between four and six so we were able to admire the beautiful architecture and the catholic bling.

Dinner options were very limited, the best option seemed to be our accommodation but the owner wasn’t interested in producing a menu and it didn’t open until 21:00 so we finished off the remaining food from last night and lunch. Our accommodation doesn’t serve breakfast, we found a bar that opens at nine so we’ll have to rely on that tomorrow.
