Oña to Burgos

I can cope with town clocks that ring every hour but Oña’s chimed every 15 minutes and we were close by. It stopped at midnight but I was too stressed to get to sleep, which didn’t come until much later. Then Christine got up at 06:30 and had a shower, thinking it was 07:30 which would still have been too early. She took a lot of convincing that she was wrong so no more sleep for me.

Our accommodation didn’t offer breakfast so we bought pastries with our bread at the panaderia and ate them in our room before walking round the corner to Bar Deportivo for hot drinks and a nice potato and onion tortilla. It was after ten when we got away, very cold at first and slowly warming up. Almost all of the day’s ride was on the via verde, easy cycling but quite slow on the non tarmac surface. Good open views of rocky hills and fields of sunflowers, darkened heads drooping. We were ourselves drooping by the afternoon as the temperature rose.

Vía Verde Santander-Mediterráneo

The map showed the via verde stopping short of Burgos with the remainder on roads but the information boards told us it continued into the city and a passing cyclist confirmed this. It still fell short, cyclists were signed along a pavement but the signage soon fell away and we spent a long time finding the route.

Eventually we found our way to our apartment and called the owner for access. We locked our bikes in the block’s communal garage, showered, shopped and ate.
