Another early start for the easy but boring ride to Punta Arenas airport along the dual carriageway, arriving in plenty of time for our noon flight. The check-in clerk was very fussy about our tyres and needed a lot of convincing that we’d partially deflated them, Schwalbe Mondials feel quite stiff even with minimal air.
On landing at Puerto Montt, a fussy employee by the baggage reclaim insisted that we re-assembled our bikes outside the area, never had that complaint before. We’d no idea of the state of the road to Puerto Varas and were very pleased to find it was sealed all the way, so a nice easy ride with very little traffic until we were on the approach to the town. We were surprised to cross a railway line, there’s now very little railway infrastructure in South America and I didn’t know there was a line this far south.
We found Hostal Azul, checked in, shopped and cooked.
