Berlin

The nearby Hasty Pastry cafe was a good choice for breakfast. We chose pidazas, a northern Italian flatbread with various fillings and folded over, accompanied by coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice. The owner spoke excellent English which he’d learned from gaming, a pursuit I’d previously thought was a waste of time. He told us business hadn’t yet recovered from the pandemic with fewer foreign tourists visiting and locals economising.

We next visited the famous KaDeWe department store, heading straight for the sixth floor food hall where we bought rye bread, cheese and cake for lunch, eaten in our room, all top quality. It was a cold day, rainy in the morning but dry in the afternoon so we walked to Brandenburger Tor and Potsdamer Platz. We returned past Siegessaule, the 67 metre high gilded column in the Tiergarten commemorating victory in the Prussian-Danish war. It was too cold to consider walking up to the viewing platform so we returned to the Premier Inn and later ate at the Vietnamese restaurant across the road.
