A disappointingly drizzly start, and it didn’t improve. We left at 08:45, fully waterproofed to ride against the wind for the ferry to Fetlar, arriving at Belmont with ten minutes to spare for the 10:20 departure. The timetable is sparse so it was essential to catch this one. A trio of minibuses were taking birdwatchers across. We were quite wet by the time we reached the shop and cafe, a good lunch stop with split pea and vegetable soup and carrot cake. This is the island’s only shop and we knew there’d be nothing else on Yell so we stocked up for our second night at Windhouse then carried on through the drizzle to the RSPB reserve. The weather was too wet to appreciate the birds so it was a disappointing day. We caught the 16:40 ferry back to Gutcher and rode through the isle of Yell to the bod.
