We thought this would an easy day with lightly loaded bikes between two places on the coast. The morning weather was cool and cloudy but improved in the afternoon. We made an early start before that B road became busy and retraced out route almost to Milnthorpe where we branched off to regain the official route at Levens. It took longer than expected to reach Grange over Sands, not getting there until midday to shop for lunch provisions. It takes the train five minutes on its flat coastal route and over the Arnside viaduct.
We paused at a cafe in Cartmel before pressing on the Ulverston and on to Barrow in Furness along narrow, hilly, twisting lanes. We rode through the town onto Walney Island and the end point of the route. There is no sign, it simply ends anticlimactically on a scrubby shingle shore overlooking the vast wind farm out to sea. From there, we cycled back to the railway station to take the 18:17 train back to Arnside.
