We awoke to a thunderstorm and were glad we didn’t have to continue our bike ride today. After breakfast we waited for the rain to ease then popped out to the shops for tomorrow’s food since it would be Sunday, then walked the mile or so to Traquair House, the oldest continually habited house in Scotland. We learned a lot about the Jacobites and religious persecution. The house has an authentic domestic ambiance despite its size, unlike National Trust properties which generally feel too clean and antiseptic. We had lunch and dinner there too, both were very good and reasonably priced. I was disappointed not to be offered beer samples which contradicted the published information but I sampled the ale in the restaurant anyway.
