Breakfast wasn’t served until 8:30 so we didn’t get away until 10:00. We had a delightful ride along a very quiet high-level undulating lane to Llangurig. At last we had a sunny day, marred by an icy strong northerly wind. After battling against it all morning we were glad to reach the Great Oak Cafe at Llanidloes for lunch – vegetarian with a hippy clientele and gorgeous carrot cake. Then up and down the mountain road to Machynlleth still against the wind but spectacular views all around. We were shattered by this time but pressed on another six miles along a quiet lane more or less parallel to the main road past the Centre for Alternative Technology to Corris Youth Hostel, arriving at 7:00. The YH was friendly and relaxed, normally we’d have self-catered but we’d arrived too late in Machynlleth to shop so we ate at the hotel. Food and beer were no more than adequate and we seemed to be the only non-smokers so we left as soon as we’d eaten.
